House Tour

Okay, so pictures never give a real good idea of a place because the size and configuration gets all out of whack. For this reason I decided to do a video tour of the place.

Before you get excited and click the link please read the following warnings:

If you are prone to motion sickness, take something now.
If you have missed my ramblings/confusing statements, you won't after this.

Actually, that's about it. Hopefully it gives you all a better idea of where I'm living- complete with the sounds I hear pretty much nonstop. Well, not when I'm waking up, but I assure you they resume by 0645 as I discovered this morning.

Oh! And if I don't mention it enough for you in the video- BOOK YOUR TICKETS NOW AND COME VISIT ME. The house is sort of creepy and it needs more people.

And now for our featured movie presentation....

Alarming Moments

Well, clearly I’m not unplugged but compared to normal it sure feels like I am! It’s actually been rather nice sitting in my very empty house, windows open, listening to the voices and traffic outside while I watch the sun set. Finding ways to entertain myself has also been fun and although letter writing, napping, and reading seem to be my go to activities I assure you all, adventuring out into the town will soon be my activity of the day. I had actually hoped to get a walk/jog in last night but when I pulled into the parking spot one of the daughters greeted me from their balcony asking if the alarm guy could stop by within the next hour.

Sure, why not?

After eating dinner, writing a few letters, and way too many distracted moments starring at the setting sun, there they were at my door. Totally not what I was imagining the alarm guy would look like. I was expecting an older guy, like the guys I had seen around the house prior to move in. Nope. Fabio was in his 20s and good looking. Still looked Italian but didn’t scream stereotypical Italian male. I got the crash course on the alarm, hot water, and heating system. Although he spoke English I was still glad the daughter was there getting all her questions answered in Italian before relaying the info. I double checked that I knew what I was doing while they were there and there were no problems. Well- I should have questioned more about if the alarms only monitored the doors/windows why in the world do I have blinking green, orange, and blue lights on the sensors in every single room.

Why?

Well, now knowing how this system operates I decided to start getting in the habit of setting it at night (when I’ve finally closed all my windows). So I dead bolted my lock (with keys, from inside…which really can’t be all that safe in the event of fire?) and set the alarm. Sweet- all the lights on it are off so alarm is set. Right? Um yes. I’m in my room for less than a minute and start hearing the beeping alarm. It wasn’t all that loud it so a) I wonder if my neighbors are hearing it? b) is the sound box upstairs somewhere? c) in the event of a real break in would that really scare the person? Luckily the alarm key was in sight and I ended that ruckus. (Thankfully it was 9pm and not 3am.)

No I really don’t have anything of value in my house right now- well, other than my espresso maker, countless letters, and SF Giants ball cap. I’m just trying to get in the habit of being safe! I guess I need to call Fabio up and ask him why the alarm went off and if it is sensor based…what’s going to happen when I have a kitten running around the place while I’m at work? Good thing he left his number.

The Little Things

I already mentioned how I’ve been just walking around my place just noticing the little things about it. Well, since I don’t really have new pictures to show of the place (and my move-in video still needs a ton of editing) here are just some of the fun colors and textures already in my place for your viewing pleasure.

Incredible Ikea

Ikea is one of those places you can go when you can’t decide if you want to go to a modern art museum or shopping. I don’t know why I thought it would be a good starting place for my putting together of my house, but I guess any reason to visit the place I’ve been driving by daily was good enough for me.

Overwhelming? Just a tad. At least back in the states if I kept reading the tags I’d see English explaining what the item was…here it stops with Italian. Entertaining? Very much so!

Tiaras, Kingdoms, & Mud

First night in the new place done! I have no idea how I was freezing with the AC set at 24C, but I was. Other than the need to reach for a blanket and a few slamming car doors I slept fabulously. By my early way up the church bells were already chiming and the sun light streamed throughout my rooftop kingdom. What? This is officially my new kingdom and as if I don’t need more reasons to want a tiara, Erin’s amazing house warming gifts gives me another.

Yep.

Tiaras DO make me taller! And as fun as they are, they are also extremely practical as they are the only 2 plates in my kingdom.

As much as I wanted to continue to sit on my rooftop with my coffee, I was due at Carney Park so off I went. Well, almost to Carney Park. I feel like the GPS has its left and right confused, but I eventually made it. In true Katie O. form, it turns out my mistake came in the last ½ of mile before reaching my destination. Unfortunately in this region mistakes like that send you out of your way and although recoverable, a u-turn saves miles. Oh well. Nothing like a side trip to smell the sulfur volcano to remind you just why you didn’t look in that part of Pozzuoli. That’s my story and I’m stick to it.

By the time I was there, my registration had already been paid for by someone I had convinced to run. That should have been a warning. The kids went first, just completing the lap once for their 1 mile. Unlike the Fort Ord event, this course was nearly flat and on pavement or lawn. No walls to climb. You actually could run through the mud…but you did have to crawl through sand. After Dylan ran with the kids, I asked him for any pointers. The following words of wisdom were given to me: “Walking is running. Running is walking. Skipping is jogging. Jogging is skipping. Skipping is jogging. And jogging is the fastest thing a human can do.” I repeated it to make sure I got it and he said “yep- you’ll take first place.” Sweet!

I did decent. Not quite first place but did okay. One of the kids of new friend decided to run the 5K rather than the kids run so I told her that I’d run with her. I caught up with her on lap two and we walked until she was good to go. (Any reason I can find to stop- right?) We did a lap and a half together and even picked Dylan up along the way. Seeing I was dangerously close to the 30min mark I told her that I had to go faster but would run back and finish it with her. No, I didn’t ditch her! We had less than a ½ of mile remaining. Dylan took a short cut and met up with me again, running along side the course shouting advice like “slide on your butt (down the hill)” and “don’t forget to skip through the mud.” Did I mention that he’s 6?

At any rate, I met my time limit (with 100 seconds to spare) and when I turned back to find my buddy I realized she had kicked it into high gear and had already crossed. She just may be a running buddy in the making. Hey- we all know that I need someone to keep me accountable mile after mile.

So we were done with the event and as I stood by the mud pit I saw Bruce pass through. Bruce is the guy that gets things done with it comes to registering cars and also happens to be my supervisor’s husband. As soon as I was spotted, he asked where my cell phone was. Not with me. Next thing I know it, he’s getting ready to pull me into the mud pit. At least he waited until someone was ready to snap some pictures. My bib was already in a sad state of affairs but this plunge led it to its shallow muddy grave. Yep. I’m sure these pics will be all over work as I’m pretty sure his entire family will be tagged on FB so by default my supervisor will see them. Whatever- people need to know what kind of fun they missed out on. As for my shoes? Well, I’ll see if they can recover as I wait for their real replacement pair to head back from Monterey.

I think the best part of all of this was driving back muddified and passing Enzo when I was almost back to my place. So I may be getting better at getting into the drive way, but that doesn’t mean I don’t stop traffic while doing it. Hey, it’s my kingdom and they need to yield to the crown. Speaking of “kingdom” I keep catching myself walking around. Maybe it’s because I’m finally free from my prison cell? The funny part is while in TLA I had internet and tv. Oh well…the quite is rather nice. Then again when I say quiet it’s really not, especially with the window open to the traffic below. I guess I’m also getting used to that though because when things turned quiet I woke up. No, I didn’t have to look at the clock- I knew it had to be 2. I’m still amazed that nearly an entire town shuts down for rest. Then again, it’s a great custom that I follow just about any day I can especially when it’s so stinking hot. Luckily I have so many windows and doors to open that I can create an awesome cross breeze throughout my tunnel.

Alright, back to scheming furniture layout. First trip to Ikea is scheduled for tomorrow and if I don’t go with a list I’ll be in trouble!

The Great Migration

Loading everything into suitcases was only Phase I of my moving experience, but that was the toughest one to take. (How come the first step is always the hardest?) Checking out was a tinge sad and Giuseppe was in shock to hear that I was leaving. He said he didn’t see my name on the check out list- yeah, they all know my name at the front desk! I swear I didn’t have that many issues but I guess my 3-4 a day walk bys had them all knowing that I lived there.

With my stuff in storage, I headed to the personal property office where I was first in line. Well, the personal assisting me couldn’t find my shipment information even though I assured her that I received an email over a month ago saying it was here. I left her with the necessary documents, set up a delivery date and she was going to call me later on with more info (like who had my stuff) later on. She did call (when she said she would!) with my delivery confirmation. So just how long am I HHG-less? Just a smidge under 2 weeks. Good thing I’ll be gone some of those days and I have lots of people willing to lend me the basics like- sheets, pots, pans, etc.

The work day was fun; I find that on Fridays we get our work done so fast that we have time to hang around and chat. I love this because it let’s me get to know some of the folks I don’t know all that well. I did get a quick N7 (engineering) lesson about condensers, water pressure, and the importance of considering how much weight is on a ship. I also got a preview of what to expect when my HHG delivery happens- and let me just say I’m willing to bribe anyone who may be free on a work day to help me out!

After the mandatory 8 hours (well, less when you take leave to deal with other stuff in the morning) I headed back to the SS to volunteer at the Back to School Block Party with Le Piume Nere. I finally met the man who put the club together and then was walked around the event and introduced to other members. We of course also did a professional job “supervising” the train ride, but for the most part the kids knew to line up so it was easy. I saw plenty of my green team VBS kids with their parents who were thrilled to have school once again starting. Figuring I had been baking enough in the sun based on the increase of freckles on my arms and the desire to jump into Monterey Bay’s freezing cold water…I headed over to my former home to load up my suitcases. Well, nothing is every that easy—this is Italy after all! I had to say ciao to the afternoon desk clerks and try to maneuver the cart full of luggage on a slanted cobble stone sidewalk. Thankfully the nicest guy EVER helped me with that one.

Since my day was getting further and further away from me, I decided to meet Tanya and her kids at the “local dinning establishment” for dinner. Hands down it was the worse dinning experience I’ve had there- and some have been not so great. The kids were dying of thirst and yet our drink order took forever, as in arrived after our meals. Sure we could have asked someone, but that would have required having someone walk by close enough to snag and ask them. Lots of people did walk by- the SS really is the place to be on Friday nights (or not if you’ve seen enough of your coworkers throughout the week).

After the longest meal ever, feeling grimy, and still way too warm for the sun to be below the horizon, it was time for Ravi and I to finally head home. I had hoped to make it by 8:30 but 9 was more of our arrival time- partially because I drove right past it, making a loop since I know that Ravi will only make a left hand turn into the courtyard.

"The eagle has landed."
On attempt #2 I noticed an old man sitting on the stairs and luckily he realized that I needed help guiding my car in the spot. Seriously- I’ve got a wiggle room of maybe 8 inches. In retrospect it would have been nice to know that prior to signing the contract BUT I’m getting the hang of it. When I got out of my car, I realized the man had walked my direction and was pointing to my car and keys. I told him in plain English that I lived here. He responded something in Italian and then I heard “parli italiano?” and had to respond with a “no.”  As he slowly lead the way up stairs to the landlady’s apartment I finally realized he must be her husband. (He is just a lot older than her?!) Once we made it to the top of the stairs he entered the apartment and I swear I heard something about Americano and turned to see familiar faces and a few more. Another one of their daughters and grandson, both speaking fabulous English, gave me the tour of the final state of the apartment and told me a few of the things I needed to know- like how to turn on the AC. After the tour they assured me that they would be home and to just come over if I needed anything at all. Well, they would be there until Weds and the grandson another week.

Once they left I made 4 (or was it 5?) treks up the steps to get my stuff. Between the steep steps to get my stuff my stuff and the ones I get to climb to get to the kitchen/living room my legs are going to reach super strength status. I sure hope Stanley can keep up! Alright, time to start evaluating usage of space and then it’s bed time- mud run tomorrow!

The Traveling Katie O. Show

I've said it before (although maybe not in this forum) I love packing. Granted, I typically put it off to the very last possible minute but it always gets done. Eventually. But seeing my suitcases means it's adventure time. Sure sometimes it just means over to Fresno or up to Berkeley but other times it's meant major life events like- going off to college, living on a ship, heading to Kenya, or an overseas move.

Although I'd like to think that the hard part of this move was getting on the plane and arriving in Italy...I doubt that will be the case. I feel like with this last pack-up the real adventure is going to begin. An adventure filled with work commutes, living in a building with a lady who speaks no English (but is thrilled I'm starting Italian classes next week), living in a place by myself (eek), navigating the local shops for produce, all while still learning the ropes with the new job. Yes, my plate may be full but I plan to eat up all Italy has to offer.

Don't judge how much stuff I've accumulated over the last 3 months...you try living out of the 2 larger suitcases and see just how long you last. Plus some of that is food (read- coffee) and then you've got my books, stationary, workout stuff...it all takes space! Oh well, I've got everything lined up and ready to roll out- next stop: HOME!

Items not in picture: backpack, purse, grocery bag x2.

90 Days!

90 days ago exhausted, emotionally overwhelmed, in need of a shower, and totally confused where I was other than "the base" my sponsor, her husband and I stood in the lobby of the hotel. As I was told step by step what was need to check in I only really remember saying "26 August is my check out date? Surely I won't be here that long." Poor Guisepppe...I think he thought I was telling the truth! Since then we run into each other several times during the week and he's always there to greet me with a "ciao." Come to think of it- all the guys are always greeting me with a "ciao" even when I have the iPod in my ears and they need to say it a little louder than normal.

Well if you check your calendar- tomorrow is 26 August and yes, my check-out/eviction date.  A little part of me is sad to leave my "dorm room" since it's so centrally located to all things Little America. I've come to know the people on my floor (even the "new" rotation). I see people I know from work while shopping and at the gym. (Well, I wish they didn't see me while I'm at the gym!) I'm walking distance to several friends' apartments. But before I get too nostalgic about this place I've referred to as "prision" one too many times during my stay I need to remember- I'm in Italy and this is not Italy.

Will I be back? Oh yeah- at least once a week so I really think I'll survive. Even if I will miss my housekeeper, lack of utility bills, and reliable internet. Speaking of internet, time to break the news. I'm going to be without it for a little while. Don't worry, I'll still be documenting all of my happenings.

Alright, my bags are far from being packed. I still have things on the walls. My fridge needs to be cleaned out. Since tomorrow is a work day I suppose I should get some sleep tonight so time to get moving. And if work doesn't motivate me? I've got a skype date with the ever so fabulous GWB at 0600.

Done with the Drama!

"Oh really? So you never wait until the last minute on a deadline or phone bill because secretly you kind of love the drama of not knowing whether or not you're going to make it?"

Yep. That line from one of the best movies (ever) has been on repeat on my brain for the better part of the last month, but today I am thrilled to announce that the last major check mark has been placed on the official "moving to Italy" list. Seriously, there has been a smile on my face since 4pm local time when the contract was signed, rent paid, and keys in my possession. Yes. KEYS. I still don't know how to work the alarm system, but have been assured that an English speaking electrician will give me the tutorial.

Things really did fall into place- from appliances to electricity and my contract kicks in on Friday. If you've been keeping tabs on my days here Friday is my 91st day in country and therefore my first day off of the TLA entitlements. It's been a stressful and very trying at times event but all part of this life changing experience I ventured out on nearly 90 days ago.

So yes, I still need to figure out when all my stuff is going to arrive but after chatting with my coworker/sounding board for all things Italy she too thought that I should wait until after France. I'll try to figure that all out tomorrow....I'm still way too happy that I have these keys in my possession!

You May Need Coffee to Keep Up...

Happy Tuesday Everyone!

I'm warning you now- I'm all over the map today (which is shocking considering it's 9:30pm) but grab that cup of coffee and/or soda because here we goooooooo...

I don't think I really woke up until 4pm today when I was on day three of this workout. For the first time since getting here I just let it all out to my workout remix and took a temporary dance break in my room. Yes, maybe I have lost it but I don't care- it was fun! And if I was dancing with my ever sore legs from day 2 that's gotta say something. Stanley wasn't thrilled but I made the executive decision that should a kickboxing class ever be offered here that I'm signing up. I miss it was too much and some days you just need to punch things...even if it is just the air.

The Facebook posts you may have seen are true- I did try to go running after my dance party. During this run I decided that since I'm in Italy all run lengths will be in kilometers now. Why? Well  2K sounds way better than a mile when I fess up just how short of a run I got in before my body hated me. What can I say? I'm a Monterey girl and after living there so many years I will gladly continue to wake up at 0345 to run before the sun comes out until we hit fall/winter. I should have waiting until closer to 8 and would have maybe hit the target 5K mark, but since I've got some serious mileage to attack in the morning it's alright.

Heading back from Bible Study I saw some familiar faces in the parking lot- it was Alida and her crew! It's only been months since I last saw so we did the quick update. *GWB please note that there may be a Gnome-napping! He wants to visit us.* It's even okay that they saw me makeup-less and my hair doing whatever it wanted since on Saturday it's mud run day and we'll all be covered in mud then.

Starving and realizing that my fridge is nearly empty (the joys of moving) I headed down to the super busy local dinning establishment. Apparently all families eat there after soccer? Which reminds me, I need to ask my coworker why we weren't out there coaching already! So my salad and soup order took a while, but I've become friends with most of the employees there so we visited in the few instances no one needed anything. When I finally got it I was starving but mid meal I realized that only a CPK BBQ Chop salad and TJ's Roasted Pepper & Tomato soup would feel the craving I've had for weeks. (Anyone feel like sending the soup my way?)

You still with me? Amazing! Today was just one of those days that I could run a mile a minute as long as it wasn't really running or work related. Ever have days like that? As soon as I left the office I was awake and ready to start my day. It's still way too early in the job to feel like that but it is what it is. I think I'm just ready to finally settle into my place (one day soon preferably) and then take a vacation.

Yes, I realize that living in Italy may sound like a vacation to all of you but I've really been going nonstop since um...early March when this whole move was initiated right after heading back from Kenya. Granted I've been in/out of the office since getting here but most of the time it's running around collecting signatures, processing documents, and getting other items checked off the ever growing list. I'll fully admit I've had some spectacular trips and hang outs with people but again, I want more than a weekend. I'm already becoming snobby when it comes to travel- aren't I? Alright, before I alienate everyone I'm logging off since that alarm of mine goes off in 6 hours. Buonanotte!

Oh Yeah, This IS Italy.

Well, like I said last week- things can come together or fall apart within a second. No, things didn't really far apart today but we came to a halting stop in terms of my contract.

Yeah. My contract remains an unsigned document. GRRRRRRRRR

Story time? You betcha.

My morning was spent running errands, wrapping up some of the loose ends financially in terms of this lease. Of course since the bank didn't open until 8 I got to chat with several of you and send off lots of emails (sorry in boxes) so it was a busy but great start to this Monday. I eventually made it to work, powered through a few major reports and wrapped up so other contracts (well, I think that's what I did...I have to wait for confirmation from my supervisor). After the perfect length of work day (approx 5 hours) I was off again to my favorite office- housing.

I got there in plenty of time and still found the mother of the owner, one of her daughters, and her son-in-law in the waiting room. As we sat there in the full waiting room, we watched the Today Show. If you missed out on it this morning, there was a segment about how women are getting tattoos later in life. And when I say "later in life" I mean late 60s. I don't know what the 3 of them were saying but their body language and tone said it all. I had to giggle because I'm sure the same expression of disgust,  shock, and confusion was on my face. Oh how I love that body language is universal.

When it's finally our time to head back I begin to think- does  she have power of attorney? I dismissed it because between the 3 of them, one of them surely had it. The 3 of them start chatting away in Italian with the contracting guy and within a minute I have an idea of what's going on- they either need Enzo or the property owner there. When the contracting guy says he'll translate in a minute, he confirmed my fear when I asked if there was an issue with the power of attorney. They continue to go back and forth and finally Enzo gets called up. Apparently he had told Teressa (the mother of the owner) that she would need to get one- her story from "he didn't tell me" changed to "I forgot" once they spoke. The daughter and son-in-law were frustrated with her but there was nothing they could do other than call the son who owns the place and have him issue a new POA.

So we started to explore our options and the supervisor came in. Turns out the supervisor is the guy that keeps sending me the emails about how many days I have left in TLA and we've sent many a emails in the past week or so. I had to watch myself because when he walked in I almost started humming the Godfather theme. When he started to talk, he even had the raspy/whisper voice. It was almost too much BUT my contract was still on the line so I had to remain focused.

Long story short (since I'm getting frustrated reliving this) the new POA should be sitting in the housing office but since they are already doing a ton of over time this week, I have to wait until Wednesday for round two. She said I can start moving things in, which is nice but since I can't get the electricity switched over until I have a completed contract it gets a little screwy- I am in Italy after all.

Needless to say after all this running around in what really was too hot of a day to be comfortable I was tired. My afternoon became a nap time since my head felt like it was going to explode- the air quality around is killing me. I finally woke up and decided that I'd still head over to see the Darius Rucker (aka Hootie) concert here on base- I mean why wouldn't you go to a concert if your head is already pounding?

After hanging out on the lawn for a while, I realized that CSO's wife and 4 girls were in front of me and before too long CSO arrived. They invited me to hang out with them and we proceeded to listen to the concert and watch their youngest dance. I think she really needs to get up to Music on the Half Shell. By the end of the show she was rolling around on the lawn in a blanket and we were laughing way too much. It was a fabulous way to end my evening and also hear some great music.

So little progress was made today but again, this is why you hope for the best and prepare for the worst! I'm just ready to have keys and move in and end this suitcase living I've been dealing with ever since I turned 28. Seriously.

Expectations vs Reality

So moving to Italy I didn't know quite what to expect. I've talked about in the past, how when I think "Italy" in my head I see the Italian flag with various Italian foods (mainly pizza), wine, the Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, gorgeous coastlines, crazy outfits claiming to be "fashion," lots of scooters and shoes (you can't forget the shoes) floating in front of it. So although all those things have been accurate there was still lots of room for some "oh wow, never thought that..." moments.

  1. There are a ton of mosquitoes here! Every time I'm out in the evening I swear one of them rings the dinner bell and the all you can drink buffet on my legs opens. Seriously, I need my Kenya strength bug repellent!
  2. The water gives a whole new meaning to hard water. On the plus side I swear my hair is turning a tinge red but it's really not worth the lack of shine. Oh and Ravi is not a fan of the sprinklers messing up his shine either.
  3. Where did all the garbage disposals go? You think I would have come to expect once I started to see the mountains of trash along the road but no, from time to time I still catch myself tossing food scraps into the sink...then pulling them all back out. Ick.
  4. Power outages occur way too often and in normal weather conditions. Now you have to remember, I lived in Monterey during El Nino in the 90s and later on lived in areas notorious for pine trees that would knock over at the slightly gust of wind. But see, if it started to get stormy, I knew to expect a power outage. Here they just happen randomly. So randomly that during that last 12+ hour one I honestly felt that Italy had been downgraded to a 3rd world country. The outages mainly come without warning and they seem to occur mostly on weekends. My theory? The skeleton staff at the power plant all decide they can go take a break but then forget to come back. If no one is there, how are they supposed to know some of the grid is down? (I'm really hoping this changes once I move off base.)
  5. Europeans really like their graphics/illustrations. Back at home it was always blue, pink, or yellow milk. Well here it's fat cow, chubby cow, or skinny cow milk. Well, at least when you get  shopping at the commissary. I just tell myself that every time I reach for that green carton I'm a skinny cow.
At any rate, that's all I've deemed list worthy after 11 weeks. Yep. Eleven weeks! After conversations with both people that have been here for years and those who have been here for just a few days, I realized that I really am getting used to the "Italian way." I guess that's what happens when once you've hit your 4 week mark and are no longer a "newbie." Seriously, there are so many new people arriving weekly. Just yesterday I attended my 2nd Hail and Farewell for the command...I did find it sad that people are leaving that I never even had the chance to meet.

Just so I don't get too comfy here in Italy, this past week I booked plane tickets- one for France and the other for Germany. Southern France for Labor Day and Garmisch for a PWOC conference right before Thanksgiving. I'm already in the scheming stage of a girls trip to Venice for carnevale in February. Hey- one of the highlights of picking Italy was in order to travel, travel, travel! Did you know that you can get to Kenya for under $1000 from Rome? Just saying...

    T minus 6 nights

It never ceases to amaze me just how a little time can often allow things to come together (or fall apart). Now before you all start talking about how long it’s taken me to find a place (I know, really, I know) I’ve got to say I think I deserve a gold star for how fast all of this is moving now.

For those of you not continually being flooded with my Facebook updates, I received fabulous news yesterday- not only was the paint on the walls but overtime was approved to schedule my contract appointment Monday. The lady (I keep missing her name) was super efficient, friendly and she kept calling my cell phone until I picked up (I had to figure out where it was when I finally heard it ringing). When she asked if Monday would work I told her any day before the 25th at any time would work- I just needed to sign that contract! She then told me the Italian expression that basically translates into “blank sheet.” With a few more “ciao bellas” our conversation was done and I was jumping for joy as I scribbled the appointment on my calendar.

No, I’m not in the clear yet. I still need to sign the contract, get utilities switched to my name, figure out which sized appliances I need, contact the warehouse for said appliances, contact the HHG folks to set up delivery, find some volunteers to help me maintain some control of said delivery, get a key, and the major task of unpacking. No I don’t get admin leave for unpacking BUT I really think I can pound it out in a weekend.

Problem is I decided to go to kick off September in France. Well, it’s not really a problem. I’m really excited to visit a new country with a few coworkers for an extended holiday weekend, but I think it means some of my other adventures will need to be put on hold until I’m unpacked. I think that’s totally worth being “grounded” in a beautiful Italian coastal town- don’t you?

Unpacked! Normally I’d think it would be a daunting task but it’s going to be like Christmas and my birthday combined and I’m going to love 99% of what’s unpacked. My long lost treasures, familiar things, and reminders of home will once again be where they belong- with me. And I can’t even begin to tell you how often lately I’ve wanted to open my closet and see a Cal Poly sweatshirt.

    ~UPDATED AUGUST SCHEDULE~
9Aug:     Pre-Contract Signed; prayers answered- inspection in the same week!
12 Aug: Inspection of unit; passed but paint still needed on walls
17 Aug: Work should be done but housing office still closed
18 Aug: Confirmed completion of paining; contract signing scheduled
22 Aug: Contract signing; deposit & first month to be paid (eek!)
    TBD:       Utility switch over
26 Aug: Move Out of Navy Lodge (so long room 327); Move In to …

Just When I Think I'm Prepared for ANYTHING

I don't know why this shocked me today at lunch, but it did. I mean let's face it- Chinese food on an US Navy Base in the middle of Italy already has more than enough warning flags. So why did I go? Well a new found friend had already been there and I was starving by 11:15 so really anywhere with food I was game.

Anyway, the translation is still up for debate so if you have some Italian skills- help a girl out! Google Translate just isn't making any sense but I'm just going to pretend it does and it translates to "the key to understanding is a smile."

    Ferragosto

So I've mentioned a few times about how August leaves the streets looking like a ghost town here in Italy. Today I stand corrected- I am now officially living in a ghost town. Today, 15 August, is Ferragosto which although I really can't find a ton of information on it, it's when the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is celebrated. (I'll do more "research" next year when the town I'll soon be living in hosts one of the festivals.)

Even the base felt emptier given that most Italian nationals get at least 1, if not up to 3 days off this week. It goes back to the labor laws here that say they only work 32 hours a week. Since working for the government requires 40 hours they essentially earn a day off every 2 weeks...which they combine with US and/or Italian holidays. Sweet gig? You bet and yes, I'm super jealous I'm not Italian. And yes, it gets worse with every out of office email I get. (Turns out Americans also take this opportunity to escape as well.) So the weekend, plus 3ish days off- most Italians are currently on the seashore celebrating with family, friends, food, and yes, fireworks. Always fireworks!

    Well, that's the Italy update.

Ready for the Katie update? After sending out several emails today I realized that I've been so busy retelling my days after they've happened that I haven't shared some of my more recent thoughts, feelings, and grand plans for the immediate future. (I'd make this a video but that would mean I'd need to stop singing along with iTunes and I'm just not on board with that plan.)  So here they are:
    • I enrolled for Italian I class. It starts at the end of the month and meets after work for 2ish hours. So although I'll learn Italian, it's going to be at the cost of my beloved afternoon nap...I better learn Italian! Two of my coworkers are also in the class and they get to work even earlier than I do so it should be interesting.
    • I still haven't heard if my house is entirely painted. I figured I'd give Enzo a break (from me at least) on this holiday but I'll get that information tomorrow. I'm super eager to move in, even if that daily drive is making me a little anxious.
    • Um I saw a few shooting stars while running this morning. Turns out it's Perseids meteor shower time. Ha. Love the things I learn when I'm running under the stars, full moon, and yes, even have the NATO security vehicle somewhat pacing me from the other side of the fence. Talk about really feeling like I'm in prison. I actually may have been their entertainment this morning since I saw them way more than normal. They were just probably wondering why someone was out there so early...
    • I'm currently trying to plan out the next few holiday weekends. Since I'm the one in my office not on travel or taking vacation I think that a day or two won't be an issue. I was actually told that I'm in charge next week, by default. I'll be supervising 2 employees. We're going to have fun. I actually asked to start learning some of the basic engineering stuff today so I can be a sub for our N7...why not? Um yeah, I can think of several reasons too.
    • I have my eye on several out of country half marathons for 2012 (in the April/May timeframe). My latest thought is to run a race in as many countries as possible. Stanley isn't completely on board with this idea right now, so we're going to ease into it. [GWB I'll email you spreadsheet.]
I think that's pretty much what's going on over here. I'm getting ready to pack up my room. I'll have to shoot another video of that so you all can see how I've made this place home after 90 days of being here. I will miss the guys at the front desk (one almost agreed to start running with me this morning when I woke him up after coming back in- oops) but it's time. It's actually past time.

    It's Showtime!

Well, in yesterday's post I already mentioned how I have a natural affinity for Fridays but this Friday was super fabulous because it was day 5 of VBS. Although VBS has been a blast and I'm 95% sure I'll be volunteering again next year, this week has been exhausting. I think I left all my energy in the sanctuary during out final performance/closing and then switched to "survival mode" while we cleaned up but let's start at the beginning.

    (Water ripple fade out)

Today's dress theme was black and white, so my green team became little panda bears. We were down a few kids (only had 23!) but they were our super stars. The first stop of the day (crafts) was a blast- we all (and I do mean all) made our headbands which we proudly wore the rest of the evening. The kids also made slap bracelets, but they just weren't the same quality of the ones we had growing up as us "adults" talked about.

Games were "eh." As the kids ran wild in between catching the volleyball and then throwing it back over one of my leaders and I started talking about how we just may need to organize games next year. Um yeah. We're already thinking about next year.

Dinner was again the highlight of the evening- complete with Super-Fly and Koko, the flying monkey brothers. Two of the kids on our team brought their space monkeys that also fly to have a fly off with them after we were done eating. I'm telling you, those flying monkeys were one of the highlights of the week and I found myself laughing way more than I should while eating dinner because of the main guy's dinner entertainment.

Story time was the least entertaining it had been all week- no tunnels to crawl through, no water raining down on us, no fish smells. We did hear about how he once killed a snake for his wife though by cutting off its head. I'm still not 100% sure how that linked into the main story of Adam and Eve...but that could be due to the bathroom trips that interrupted my story time.

Then we headed off to the chapel for our last minute prep before the 730 show time. After storming the stage (just like how they were told NOT to do) they did it properly and sang just loud enough to be heard on the balcony. I was such a proud mama panda bear and although none of the kids were mine, I just realized that in another life maybe I could have a kid that age right now. I also realized something bad- I just may be a stage mom. The leaders of Green Team unanimously decided (without actually discussing this with each other) that the kids and the kids alone were going to take the stage. Instead, we all sat where the kids could see us and made sure they were smiling, singing loud enough, and remembering all of their hand motions.

After the last kid was signed out, the sanctuary and other rooms used during the week transformed back to their "plain, boring" spaces, no longer taking us through China. My one leader that stayed around till the end and I then marched on over to the restaurant on base (headbands and all) for a well deserved adult dinner and beer. One of my buddies at the front desk loved our look, although he looked a little scared. You think by now they would know to expect anything from me- work attire, workout clothes, my post-4am run look, the same panda shirt for 5 days, so really? A ninja headband really should be no surprise. The best part was that there were a few VBS families also there and their kids got a big smile over the fact that we too were still wearing out headbands. (I'm already thinking it's going to my part of my mud run outfit in a few weeks...)

So yeah, VBS 2011 is officially done. I'm super happy that I decided to volunteer my time, because it was a great time and I not only some amazing kids (that I may see on my soccer team in the fall or at Girl Scout events) but also met some fabulous adults. It was completely worth the long hours I put in the week and being told a few times that I looked tired.

Another Step Closer to Move In Day, Another Day Closer to Eviction from TLA

Sometimes I let Fridays pass with very low expectations. Friday after all marks the end of my work week. It means that there are 2 days free of work to pass by watching cheesy movies, sleeping in, or even escaping from town and return at the last minute possible to still be at my desk come Monday morning.

Well, not this Friday. This Friday had huge expectations on account that it was house was inspection day.

First things first- it passed! But this is Italy so things are never that easy. I’ve been thinking lately about how I need to create an Italy factor when trying to get anything done around here. Let’s take a look at the latest example why:

I called the housing office yesterday afternoon to ask if they had a better idea than "Friday" for the inspection time. I was told to expect a call between 0800-0900 in the morning. I politely reminded her to call my office number, repeating that my cell phone would not be with me so I could not answer.  Well, I got a call this morning. A call on my work line at 0930 saying my appointment was at 1000 and that they'd been trying to get a hold of me via cell phone. Ugh. At any rate, here's your geography lesson of the area for the day. Study it because a quiz is up next...

Could someone please tell me how long it would take me to drive mid morning from work (located in Naples) to MdP? Assume that I am going the speed limits since I’m still super paranoid that one day I’m going to get a stack of tickets in my mail. Also keep in mind 90% of Italians are at the beaches this time of year and I have to drive through at least one beach town.

    Map from coworker.
Yeah, it was a quick sprint out of my office after having all my coworkers ask with great concern if I’ve ever driven there on my own before. Legit concern since I never had from this route. With a quick map in hand and rough idea I was moving as fast as my feet could go while in wedges across cobble stone.

It ended up taking me about 50 minutes (once getting to my car and out the gate)- partially due to traffic, partially due to having to wait for busses and large vehicles to cross the road the base shares with the airport, partially due to the fact that once getting there I had a horrible time finding somewhere to park. I then realized that I could just park in the spot that will belong to me.

Ravi received his first scar from Italy…I still need to assess so don’t ask anymore questions
but I figure it was bound to happen (and most likely will again) so we’re going to move
on. (Seriously though, I didn’t see anything but I sure heard something...so I'm sure something is there.)

While walking up the stairs to the front door I got really nervous- what happens if I hate this place?

    I’m already committed!

Although I didn’t see what I was expecting to see the view was fabulous. In the past two weeks they’ve been hard at work- updating the alarm system, re-doing 2 bathrooms, fixing a squeaky step, painting and the place looks great. Granted the down stairs portion was still covered in tarps with home repair supplies all over and 3 guys working diligently- but I loved the house even more today. It still seems way to big for just me so please start making your plans to come visit- I need to be able to justify this 3 bedroom, 3.5bath, place.

I think I’m even changing my opinion on some of the furniture that comes with the house- I’m going to need it since going from a 2 bedroom shared place to a 3 bedroom place by my self requires more stuff. Granted, one room is going to be the Italian Kitty’s room so that will all need to be furnished but I think this other stuff is going to work out just fine (at least in the beginning).

Here’s my soon to be home photo mash. Granted it still looks more like a construction site or the set of a HGTV show, but I assure you it’s only going to look better when I’m done with it. And seriously, one of the highlights is the view and you can now see where I get to spend my evenings on the rooftop patio surrounded by my cilantro garden with a glass of wine (or cup of coffee) in hand and a kitty telling me all about all the napping in sunshine s/he did that day.

Top Left- Bottom Right: Kitchen, sun room, downstairs 1/2 bath, office/guest room, viewx2, storage, kitchen, living room, upstairs bathroom w/laundry, amazing view.

One question still remains and that is “when do I get the keys?” The contract signing appointment has not yet been made on account that they won’t let us until all the painting is completed. I’ve been told the workers will be there on Tuesday (and Wednesday if need be) so I plan on checking in on Tuesday to see if the appointment has been made before Enzo goes on holiday in Spain. I’m hoping that we can still snag one of the appointments on either the 25th or 26th and I can move in the same day. Utilities are already turned on so that helps, but there will still be some time to figure out switch over and also get some of the appliances swapped out.

Then I get to figure out when my stuff shoes show up. Ha. I love how my brain automatically thought “shoes” when talking about my shipment of stuff so that’s what was typed. Seriously though, those black flats of mine need to be trashed and I would apart from the fact that means I’ll be in heels all the time for work now. I’m not sure if I’m ready to tower over everyone here at this new job…plus that means walking in with flip flops which make just as much noise as heels half the time. See what type of important decisions I have to make when getting ready in the mornings? Some days I’d love to throw on a uniform and call it a day.

So yay for Friday! And yes, this was only the first shift… Tonight was the big night for VBS and CSO was there in addition to a few other folks I work with who have kids enrolled in the program. You’ll just have to stay tuned to hear how the week turned out on that one because it's late, I'm exhausted, and I have more fun things planned for tomorrow.

Day Four: God Loves You No Matter What

And it happens to be your favorite team day for the kids. Well, I had to chuckle in the prep for today and yes, I may have changed the message of the day to read something like: Katie loves the SF Giants no matter what. True, last year it was pretty easy to love them but there were a lot (like more than I've been alive) years full of let downs and even last year they were tough to love at times but as a fan that bleeds orange and black you can't help but love them regardless.

My other spin on the message was "God loves you no matter what....Unless you're a Dodgers' fan." Yeah, I didn't think that one was too kid friendly either so it stayed in my head. Let's just say I was happy to see some Giants and A's gear on my kids and in the other teams.

So our group started off small but by the end of the kick off- all 26 were there. We were craft rock stars and finished up super early and headed out to the lawn to play our Panda Blast Games. Tonight's game involved a relay of water filled sponges. My team (yes, I ran anchor again) won 2 of 4 rounds...but not the one we needed to win to pick the next game. The team who did that decided that Sponge- Duck-Duck-Goose was the best bet. So yeah, that's what we played. Duck-Duck-Goose this version basically ended up with the water being squeezed on top of your head when you're the goose. Um my hair is still wet....3 hours later. But it's all for the kids- right?

The rest of the night was better than yesterday. I don't know if that's because my group sits in the back so the other volunteers and parents help with crowd control or what but I'll take it. Tomorrow should be cake with the parents there to watch us perform and also with even more of my kids gone due to vacations.

I guess I need to practice just a tad more before that performance. I'll work on it when I drive out to MdP for the inspection. Yep, tomorrow is my last way busy day for a while so I figure why not hang out with my unofficial "team leader" after our official duties as volunteers wrap up. Alright time to go debrief and recharge...

Day Three: More than 1/2 Way!

Phew. It's the half way point and I'm feeling like I'm on already tapping into my reserve energy. This morning when my alarm went off and I had to get up to walk across the room to turn it off I swear to you all that I started to sing "Wild About You." Yep. Even at o'way dark thirty I can't escape this song. I guess it's part of being a leader- it takes over but that's when you have the most fun!

At any rate after one of my oh so famous discussions in my head this morning I realized that I really didn't have the energy to stay up and run. Back to bed I went and continued to sleep...a tad later than I should have. Oh well, I made it to work...eventually. None of us were swamped with work so we had fun chatting in between tasks. I honestly think that my coworker thinks I'm going to be his assistant coach for soccer in the fall. He didn't seem to buy the argument that I need to hang out with people my own age rather than little kids and their parents. In fact my "no baggage" motto was thrown back at me in rebuttal. The work day didn't really fly by but my problematic traveler that I know some of you heard about earlier this week struck again. Of course we didn't know this until 15 minutes before I had to leave and when we couldn't get a hold of him. (Isn't it refreshing to read that this nonsense doesn't only happen at NPS?)

Then it was time for VBS. I was ambushed walking across the courtyard by one of the little girls. She could move in her yellow rain boots. No it wasn't raining but she likes her boots.

Apart from a few behavior issues tonight we did well. It's amazing how just by participating with them how many issues can be resolved. For that reason I made a paper person (she's not done yet though since I was still helping the kids), ran anchor for my relay team, had them practice our song while waiting for dinner, had them play "Katie Says" when we had some time to kill, and yes, did the chicken dance during Undignified. It's totally worth it to see them laugh and mimic. My helpers did a good job too but they just don't seem to want to have as much fun. I guess they are saving it all for Friday?
So although I'm super tired and am pretty much resigned to the fact that I'm not going to get any workouts in this week I've decided it's all worth it. When else can I sit by a tree trying to figure out what was wrong with one of the little boys? Turns out he was looking for a bug to take home. When else can I  let the kids eat their Rice Crispy Treat before their nuggets? And you should have seen the looks I got from the adults...don't put dessert on the table with the main meal I was going to do the same thing- the kids just beat me to it.

At any rate, it was another successful night but now it's time to get caught up with real life...like putting away laundry and washing dishes.

    It's All Connected

It never ceases to amaze me how various aspects of my life will all of a sudden crash into each other when they seem like they are the most opposite things ever. Well, today was another "in your face Katie" kind of day.

Today was thankfully a slow start morning- my pre-contract appointment was at 8 so that was my first official place to be. Are you confused about all these apartment viewings, going in to make an appointment, pre-contract appointments, inspections, contracting signing? Don't worry. I always just tell them what the last step I completed was and they tell me what's next. But seriously, it's complicated. I have to share the following from an email from my dad because although it's super ridiculous, it pretty much sums it all up:

OK, so I confess I am a bit confused.  You said you signed your "pre-contract" today.  But I don't remember you reporting signing the "preliminary-pre-contract".  And before you sign "The Contract" don't you have to sign the "post-pre-contract" and then The Contract then the post-post contract?

(Yes dad- I did laugh over that one.)

So at any rate Enzo convinced the inspector from the housing office to inspect my house on Friday since he'll already be in MdP. Yay Enzo! I actually think he was worried about his vacation which starts on the 18th (and the housing office is closed M-W next week for Italian holidays). I don't care- we got what we wanted! Well, pushing our luck he asked if we could also schedule the contract signing for the 25th or 26th. My vote of course is the 25th since I check out the morning of the 26th. That was a no go...even when we asked the supervisor of Enza, the contracting person we were meeting with. Oh well. Enzo assured both her and I that this place will pass Friday's inspection.

Off I go- happy that I not only signed the pre-contract but also got the inspection scheduled this week. Okay, getting to sleep in and having a chat session with home probably played into that a bit too but the housing situation is what's been keeping me up at night so it was nice to have progress (no matter how little) after 2 weeks.

Fast forward to me sitting in the chapel waiting for my amazing Green Team chatting with one of my assistants and one of the other volunteers. They too are currently going though this process and decided to rain on my parade by saying that houses never pass the first inspection. Well big boo. I'm still keeping my optimism though...I feel like the inspection of Friday was already a huge win so I'll just see how everything else plays out. And besides, I didn't have time to worry about it...kids starting pouring into the chapel and I quickly realized that without their name tags I have no idea who they are!

We made panda face drums & kazoos. (And couldn't wait for parents to sign their kids out.)

We played red light green light where I dominated. Although we played by doing the crab walk, the whole concept of "green, yellow, and red" are beginning to fade here in Italy...so I may have still moved forward when red was called? The kids did the same though and I still won but it was pretty close.

At dinner my team was so polite and quiet compared to the screaming blue team that passed us in the stair well. Seriously. My team was asked to perform the theme song for the kitchen crew but since that seems to be the "I need to use the bathroom" stopping point the performance was cancelled this evening. Maybe after our meal of chicken nuggets tomorrow they will be ready. Tonight's kid friendly dinner had my plate looking rather brown/tan/yellow - apple slices, grilled cheese, graham crackers, oranges.Where's the green stuff?

And then there was story time. We learned about King Ahab and Jezebel and as soon as marriage was mentioned, my up then pretty quiet room erupted in "ewwwwws" and a ton of laughter. I guess the ATP kicked in and my little troopers started acting like 5-7 year olds again.

Off to singing time we sang How Great Thou Art about 10 times with hand motions. My little curly haired 4 year old (who we later thought went missing but I guess just wanted to sit with the red team?) had a great time spreading her arms out for the "thy pow'r throughout, the universe displayed" portion. I had to turn my head to hide my reaction when one of the teen leaders asked the kids what "How Great Thou Art" meant followed by a "that's really really old English."

Closing was challenging yet again. After 3 hours of being together and it's late for some of them (yes, and me) kids start getting a little out of control. One of my instigators won't be there the rest of the week so hopefully it will be bit easier...maybe? I just wanted to sing and dance to the songs stuck in my head 24/7 at this point but even my ridiculous dance moves (I swear that's what we're going for, I just have a natural knack for it) can't get the kids back into it once they've lost focus.

At any rate, today's theme was God Listens to Me! (See? It's all connected.) I firmly believe this and although I often find we're not on the same time table, He hasn't let me down. I often tease that this job offer was nothing short of Divine Intervention...seriously if that other offer came through I'd be writing you from Mississippi right now. Ick. Don't throw this back in my face later on, but I'm pretty sure I'll take Naples on its worst day any time over Stennis.

    Let the Good Times Roll!

Well, it's here----my crazy long week where I go to work for 8 hours and then volunteer for 4 hours as I serve as the Green Team Leader for VBS.

Is it going to be a blast? You betcha!

Am I going to let the original Katie O. (as in the pre-schooler version when I first was dubbed Katie O.) out? Oh yeah.

Is it going to be a caffeine filled week? Oh you better believe it.

Training happened over the weekend and although admittedly I've been out of the VBS circuit for some years but this one was unique. How so? Well we talked about security threat procedures. Granted we are in a foreign country, on a US military base but it just caught me off guard. Oh well, if my Girl Scout days taught be anything it was to be prepared.

As previously mentioned we're using the Panda Mania curriculum so it's a panda filled week. No problem for this panda lover! Check out my awesome shirt that not only did I make, but I get to wear all week! Yeah, I really should have made two.... but he has freckles just like I do. The panda (without ears, but with freckles) is on the front and the "God is Wild About Me!" is on the back.

Give me another day and I'll be able to sing and perform with hand motions the theme song "Wild About Us." Hey- just cause I'm able to, doesn't mean I will. Eh, who am I kidding? I've already caught myself humming the tune and it's only day one. Spend any amount of time with me and you'll hear it.

Sorry. It is rather catchy! I should be working more on the hand motions for the leaders' performance of Undignified for Friday. Again, such a shame that so many of you are located in the United States and unable to make that performance.

My team grew (as in almost doubled) since the roster I saw on Saturday, but I also got 2 more assistants so that's good. My kids are awesome and I'd say 80% of them are 5. How do I know this? One of our games tonight was to see how old everyone was. Let me tell you...28 has never felt so old! Also during this game I realized that not many 5 year olds know their middle name...I guess they never get in trouble?

There were a few tears when kids realized their friends weren't in our same group or when parents left but nothing the tackiest green paper umbrella couldn't make better. (I'm just so glad I don't have to carry that around as the leader of the group!)

My fingers were painted while I held a stencil down with each hand while tables of 2 painted their shirts. The kids teased me since I had paint on me but they didn't have much on them...I wonder how that happened.

The girls out number the boys probably 1:3 so when we sing our theme song that breaks into two parts, I help the boys out. They will do the hand motions and try to be heard over the girls!!!

The little boy who prayed over our oh-so-kid-friendly meal of hotdogs and tots prayed for good tasting food. It's so hard not to laugh when you're not expecting it to be voiced but secretly hoping the same thing.

During story time, when asked for different types of bears I was the one in the back feeding answers to the kids. It's not cheating...the koala, kodiak, and the sun bear all need to be known! Oh and I even kept my mouth shut with we were supposedly listing types of fish yet some of the following answers were accepted : whales, dolphins, jellyfish, seahorses. Who is teaching these kids science?!?

I've got twin girls that are adorable that with 2 other non related girls seem to always be by my side. There are two brothers 4.5 and 6 that are so cute and are always sticking together.

By 7:30 some of the kids were looking pretty sleepy. I was trying my best to keep the energy going but my reserve fuel was almost gone. One little girl asked if it was midnight. I told her no, but checked my watch just to make sure.

After one last round of Big House (aka the touchdown song) I was more than ready to get out of the marble floored, high ceiling, kid filled sanctuary and into some quiet even though tonight was a blast and it brought back a ton of RCP memories. I figure I've got 4 more days of this so it's probably time to get to sleep and get ready for the repeat tomorrow...

And oh yeah. If this post seems like a million times happier than the last two it's because it is. I'm still dealing with a lot of σκύβαλα (skubala) but nothing like getting a letter from one my little girls (Keiry) and watching 160+ kids sing, dance, and just have a blast to put things in perspective. I'll still be an adult when I have to this week, but I think I'm going to act more like a kid when I can...why let the small stuff bog me down?

Katie v Italy: our first falling out

This is just how my life is going right now....

Yesterday I teased about living under a rock for the weekend- but one with power right? (It's okay if you haven't read it yet). Well this morning probably around 5 I hear the power go out. How does one hear the power go out? Well, all of a sudden your AC turns off, you hear a few little clicks, and then if the little kids next door are awake you suddenly hear them. It's amazing that no matter how low I have the AC on it serves as a sound buffer. I think I was actually hearing people in the hall way too. Ah the joys of living in a hotel.

It's after 10 now and the power is still out. I'm not sure how I'm going to do my laundry or cook without the power coming back on. The two things going for me this morning:

When I realized the power was still out I almost had a fit when I realized coffee wasn't in my future. I then  remembered (or maybe it my brain was a little slow on the wake up?) what was in my cabinet due to the fabulous Stephanie. THANK YOU for this amazing iced soy vanilla chi latte I'm sipping on this morning.

Blessing number two was a fully charged laptop. And yes, I've already adjusting settings to maximize the battery life! Yay for a soundtrack for what is going to have to be a productive day. Seriously- talk about all my distractions eliminated! I mean weekends are tough enough since most of those I chat with aren't making appearances until late afternoon but I don't have emails to check, baseball scores to catch up on, or even shopping to do while I wait for the west coast to wake up.

Last week I had a few conversations with a friend talking about how sometimes bad things really turn out to be blessings in the long run. Granted in her case it was way more life changing than power being out for 5+ hours but I can't help but think that this is just a reminder that it's true. Well, I may as well go turn this minor set back into a good thing- cleaning part two, writing letters, and trying to make progress in Out of Africa sounds like just a fabulous (laundry free) way to spend my Sunday. Hopefully it's not totally laundry free though because I really would like some clean clothes...

1227 Update: Power is still out but my desk is no longer covered with stacks of letters, papers, and post-it notes. This is the longest power outage I've experienced so far here in Italy. Sort of reminds me of the Hawaii quake of 2006 when we were forced to play board games and drink wine...but that time around I was with 3 of my best friends so the entertainment was abundant. Oh well. Just another adventure to add to my ever growing list. I guess I could venture out to see if both loops of the base are missing power or if it's just this loop. (Mainly cause the kids are back next door.)

1400 Update: I think that if I had a camera set up in my room to tack my movement sporadically (aka time elapse) it would be rather entertaining. I think I travel the same triangle route every time I get up, regardless if I really need to. Stir crazy? Just maybe. Well, I'm making a break for it- time to go on a recon mission. I'm not sure what I'm going to find but I think getting out of my rather clean cell may be a good thing. Eh, who am I kidding? It's necessary at this point!

1445 Update: Power is out base wide. The guys I talked to only had that info to offer and a "welcome to Naples." Ha. But they were totally right. Decided to walk off some energy (that triangle was too small to keep pacing) but then I realized it was rather warm. I did however see parts of the base in daylight that up to this point I've only seen at twilight.

1500 Update: Too hot to do anything but sleep. Good night. Saving last 35% of laptop battery.

1645 Update: I've had just about all I can take. Wanted to call home but realized my phone was dying.

1715 Update: Writing more letters and for about a nanosecond I heard the AC kick on. Major tease. Um, Lacey- I'm warning you now that your letter may be rather dramatic...even more than this post. Like I said. Final straw.

1720ish: Power finally back on. Just in case you didn't realize that was the case, the fire alarm system also did a reset announcing to all of Griciango that the base once again had power.

Seriously. That's my Sunday. It's still laundry free but another good thing to come out of it was the fact my mini freezer is now defrosted and luckily I didn't have anything that was destroyed. You think food would be okay without power for 12 hours but I swear this fridge isn't like the ones we have back in the states. Sometimes things are really cold....sometimes they're cool. It's really anyone's best guess.

In summary. Today is my first day in 10 weeks and 1 day that I'm not liking Italy. I knew it was bound to happen eventually but who would have thunk that a power outage would be the tipping point? I'm dead serious too...if I find out that the power company let all their employees start their August vacation which caused this situation I just may be asked to leave this host country.

Okay, Drama Queen out. Miss you all and I hope that your Sunday is filled with all the electricity you need to power your washing machine, kitchen appliances, and AC units.
